The particulars will be in the form of an initial profile, detailing the nannies' experience, qualifications, interests and information relating to comments from previous employers. Further information relating to nanny will be available upon request, i.e. full CV, copies of qualifications etc
Following receipt of the nannies details, you can then telephone those of interest to discuss your requirements and arrange a first interview. If you do not want to make the first contact with nannies, then we will be happy to arrange initial nanny interviews on your behalf.
Following nanny interviews, we will discuss your feedback on each nanny. If none of the nannies put forward to you were suitable, we will continue to forward appropriate details of new nannies. We will then continue this process until you are satisfied with your choice of nanny.
Do you interview all your Nannies?
We believe it is vital to get to know our nannies as well as possible before they are put forward to a potential family. All nannies are therefore interviewed by one of our experienced team of consultants. If a personal nanny interview is not possible, for example, due to the location of the nanny, then the nanny will undergo a thorough telephone interview on the understanding that they will have a personal interview at a later date, prior to family interviews

What are Child Care Vouchers and how do I get them?
Childcare vouchers are allowed for parents, who are employed and paying PAYE (either one or both parent may to eligible). They are intended to save Income Tax and National Insurance on registered or approved childcare. The allowance is £55 per week, or £243.00 per month.
This would amount to a significant saving per parent of up to £962.28 per year for a 22% tax payer and £1195.56 per year for a 40% tax payer. The vouchers can be used for any form of childcare, for children from the ages of 0 - 15 (16 if disabled) years old, and can include (but is not limited to) nurseries, childminders, nannies, breakfast clubs, after school clubs and holiday clubs, providing the childcare is approved or registered with OFSTED.

The approval fee is £99.00 (this includes VAT and is non-refundable). This covers the cost of administration and Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure (CRB check). Approval only lasts for 12 months, to continue using the Childcare Vouchers you will need to reapply and pay the approval fee every year.

Who is responsible for the Nannies Tax and National Insurance?

What are my legal responsibilities when employing a nanny? - top
If you employ a nanny in the UK and you pay her more than £100 per week (tax year 2007/2008) you have the same responsibilities as a commercial employer and the law requires you to:
Register as an employer with HMRC
- Keep a payroll record and provide payslips on her behalf
- Pay Employee's income tax and National Insurance Contributions
- Pay Employer's National Insurance Contributions
- Provide an annual summary of all these deductions and payments
These obligations also apply:
- If your nanny earns less than £87 per week in your employment but more than £100 in total (e.g. if she has two part-time jobs)
- In short-term employment (i.e. a week or longer)
- To any employment taking place in the UK - irrespective of the country of origin of the nanny or employer
As an employer you are also responsible for paying Statutory Sick Pay and Maternity Pay - but the latter may be reclaimed in full from the state.
Remember that National Insurance Contributions go towards your employee's entitlement to unemployment and state pension benefits. Nannies are increasingly aware of their rights as employees and an employer who takes care of their nanny's PAYE properly will be considered a good employer in this respect and enjoy the increased confidence of their nanny.
Net or Gross Wage
When nannies and nanny agencies agree a salary with the parents they often talk about the net wage - the amount the nanny has in her hand at the end of the week. But in reality the nanny is always paid a gross wage (net wage + tax + NIC), and on top of the gross wage the parents are obliged to pay employer's NIC. Therefore there is a considerable difference between the net wage and the true cost of employing a nanny. Parents are advised to find out the true cost before agreeing on a net wage. Penalties
Failure to register as an employer if you are paying your nanny above the weekly threshold is an offence, which can potentially lead to heavy penalties and career-damaging publicity.
Consider the following:
- Failure to file employer's annual returns by 19 May can result in penalties of £100 per month filed late
- Failure to pay all tax/NI liabilities before 19 April results in interest being charged on the amount outstanding
Self-employment
With few exceptions (maternity nurses and nannies in continuous temporary employment), nannies simply do not meet HMRC criteria for self-employment. Even if your nanny has been granted self-employment status for another job, you should contact HMRC to check that her status is carried over to her job as a nanny; we would also recommend that you get confirmation in writing. If you take on a nanny who you mistakenly think is self employed it could result in fines, penalties or even a criminal record.
Also remember if liability to pay tax is not declared in full to HMRC and it comes to light, it is you, the employer, who will be pursued for payment, not your nanny.
National Minimum Wage (NMW)
The current NMW is:
- £3.30 per hour (gross) for employees aged between 16 and 17 (to increase to £3.40 on 1 October 2007)
- £4.45 per hour (gross) for employees aged 18-21 (to increase to £4.60 on 1 October 2007)
- £5.35 per hour (gross) for employees aged 22 and over (to increase to £5.52 on 1 October 2007)
Nannies that live as part of the family household are exempt from NMW.
Do I need a Nanny contract?

Do I need Nanny Insurance?

How many hours and days can a nanny be expected to work?
When employed in a private household, it may be difficult to strictly define hours of work and free time. Most nannies have 2 free days per week and work for 5 days per week, from Monday to Friday. On average a nanny will work 10 hours per day (although this is negotiable). Hours must be agreed before the start of employment.
Under the 1998 Working Time Regulations, nannies are entitled to a minimum of 4 weeks paid holiday per year, to be taken at mutually agreed times. It is customary for time off to be given for Bank Holidays, or for additional payment to be made if time off is not suitable.
What petrol allowance would we expect to pay our Nanny?
If your Nanny will be using their own car to carry out their duties, you as the employer would be expected to pay a petrol allowance. The current recommended allowance is between 30 pence and 40 pence per mile.
What is an Enhanced CRB Disclosure?
The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) is an Executive Agency of the Home Office, which provides wider access to criminal record information through its Disclosure Service. This service enables organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work, especially that involve children or vulnerable adults. The CRB was established under Part V of the Police Act 1997 and was launched in March 2002.
The current legislation does not allow the self-employed or individuals to apply for a CRB check on themselves. In addition, parents who employ a nanny/au pair/babysitter directly cannot apply for a CRB check; however, if an agency supplies the nanny/au pair/babysitter, the agency is entitled to carry out a CRB check.

Are Enhanced CRB Disclosures portable?
Portability refers to the re-use of a CRB check (Disclosure), obtained for a position in one organisation and later used for another position in another organisation.
Please note: The CRB procedures no longer facilitate portability. Any organisations or individuals that choose to accept a previously issued CRB Disclosure do so at their own risk.

A perfect Balance Nanny Agency accepts Nannies who have one of the following recognised childcare qualifications?
CACHE (The Council for Awards in Childcare and Education), have recently taken over the conduct of this diploma and now also award a one-year certificate in Childcare and Education. What the course involves: 14 different modules covering both theory and practical areas of childcare.
An NNEB (DCE) diploma in nursery nursing indicates the holder undertook a full time 2-year course covering the ages of 0-7. This is probably the most widely recognised qualification and gives student's hands on experience in addition to the academic course which covers the physical, social, educational, intellectual and emotional needs of different ages. Other areas of study include health and hygiene, play and first aid.
GNVQ courses are seen as vocational alternative to A levels. They are administered by City and Guilds and are aimed to cover Childcare and related studies. GNVQ Levels 2, 3 & 4 can take up to two years to complete and are competence based. Students are given hands on experience and subject to assessment in the workplace. What the course involves:
Level 2: assessed in a range of competencies dealing with children's physical, emotional and social development.
Level 3: assessed across 15 units including ability to work and care for children without supervision and management and support for parents and family.
Level 4: assessed for the ability to run and develop a play area and supervise other staff.
NVQ National Vocational Qualifications are assessed within the workplace where students have to prove that they have achieved a certain level of competence and capability. Students have to complete 15 modules and courses can take up to two years to complete:
NVQ Level 2: is a qualification obtained by a childcare worker in a supervised role, e.g. a nursery assistant. NRQ Level 3: can be obtained by professional childcare workers and could be considered the equivalent of a DCE . A child carer undertaking this training shows a commitment to learning about high quality childcare. An experienced childminder or mother's help could apply to be assessed at this level. NVQ Level 4 is undertaken by a childcare worker who would already be trained to management level - and tends to be more academically challenging.
ADCE (Advanced Diploma in Childcare and Education). This is an advanced course open only to experienced Childcarers. What the course involves: Advanced course work dealing with special educational needs and with appraisal and training methods of childcare and education.
A BTEC National Diploma in Child Studies (Nursery Nursing) indicates the holder studied for a full time course of a higher level than the NNEB diploma. The course places more emphasis on the academic work and includes modules for those interested in teaching, nursing, social work and childcare. This BTEC diploma is a full time two-year course .
The NAMWC Certificate (National Association of Maternal and Child Welfare) is aimed at 16-18 year olds and covers children from 0-Teenagers, whilst an advanced certificate is aimed at more mature students such as Childminders who wish to study for a Professional Qualification.
Private Colleges offering specialist training include the Norland Nanny College, The Princess Christian College and The Chiltern Nanny Training College. Courses are 2 years and are generally followed by a probationary period of 6-9 months. A wide range of subjects are studied and students are awarded the NNEB and Health Diploma.
Other Qualifications include the Pre-School Play-Group Diploma and The Montessori Childcare and Teaching Diploma . The Montessori Diploma is a privately run course which is taken either full time or by correspondence and covers children aged 2-7. The course promotes the philosophy of Maria Montessori who believes in Children's ability to teach themselves within a structured learning environment
Do I need a visa or work permit to work as a nanny?
You will need to have a visa or work permit if you are from any country outside the EU. This is something that you will need to arrange yourself directly with the Home Office.
